Betty Spraggins (née Hardnett), age 82, of Lorain, Ohio, transitioned to eternal rest on Monday, February 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born on May 21, 1943, in Woodland, Georgia and remained there until 1961 after graduating from Ruth High School and moving to Lorain, Ohio. It was there that she met her husband, John Spraggins and was married for 54 years until his passing in 2018. The couple had one daughter, Benita.

Betty was a committed member of New Bethel Primitive Baptist church for over 50 years. There she was actively involved in the Pastor’s Aide Club, Ladies Auxiliary Club and on the Mother’s Board. It was not uncommon for her to be chauffeured by her husband to visit the sick and shut in or in the church kitchen helping. She also coordinated many plays that were staged at the church to celebrate Christmas and Easter holidays. Gardening and yard art were also her passions. She was known for her beautiful flowers both in Lorain and in Cincinnati, where she resided with her daughter. Her other hobbies included doing crosswords puzzles and word searches and she enjoyed Family Feud and Westerns. She took great joy in the relationships she had with her nieces and nephews.

Betty retired from Lorain City Schools after 32 years of service and devoted more time to the ministry of helping others and liked loving on family and friends.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Benita Joyce Spraggins; sister Mary Ann (Curtis) Brisby and brother, Preston Hardnett (Mary Jane) and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren and extended family and friends whom she loved deeply and was deeply loved by.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Spraggins; parents Abraham Sr. and Mary Ann Hardnett; brothers Fred Hardnett, Jasper Lee Hardnett, Abraham Hardnett Jr., Major Hardnett, Frank Hardnett, Gabriel Hardnett, Walter Hardnett and sister Minnie Dowd.
