Dorothy Jean Evans Herring, age 76, of Lorain, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2025, at UH St. John Medical Center in Westlake, Ohio. She was born May 22, 1949, in Montgomery, Alabama to her proud parents Lawrence C. Evans Sr. and Carrie Bella Jackson.
Often called Dot Jean, she was loved by many, which included family and friends. Throughout her career as a nurse’s assistant and as a home health care assistant, she worked in several nursing homes caring for the elderly.
She enjoyed reading the Bible gardening, cooking, feeding the birds and squirrels, listening to music and singing, especially gospel, and karaoke night.
Dorothy Jean often attended Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. However, she gave her life to God on Easter Sunday 1989 at Compassion where she served on the usher board.
Dot Jean will be sadly missed by four brothers, Melvin Moore and Jeffery Moore, both of Lorain, LaFaye Moore of Lakeland, Florida, and Anthony Moore of Lorain; nine sisters, Francies Evans of Montgomery, Alabama, Mrs. Lois Thomas Evans and Mrs. Lucy Evans, both of Schenectady, New York, Ms. Edith Fields of Waveland, Mississippi, Ms. Rosetta Alexander of Buffalo, New York, Mrs. Marilyn (George) Thomas of Canton, Mississippi, Mrs. Aldrenna (Ricky) Wade-Smith and Miss Lenise Moore, all of Lorain, and Ms. Shirley Valentine Davis of Dallas, Texas; a very special niece, Miss Taleeyah Hairston of Lorain; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Dot Jean was preceded in death by her daughter, Tawana Kim Evans; her husband, John T. Herring; her father, Lawrence Evans Sr; her mother, Carrie B. Moore; her stepfather, West Moore Jr; her brothers, Lawrence Evans Jr, Jimmy Pee Wee Evans, Michael Moore, Charles Burroughs, Douglas Elvis Moore, Rodger McGee, Terrence J. Jackson, and Richard Burroughs; two sisters, Rita Moore Seavers and Margaret (Charlene) Moore Noble; her maternal grandparents, Mr. George Sr and Maggie Bell Jackson.
Visitation will be held Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 11:00 AM until time of service at 12:00 PM at God’s Believers in Christ Church, 520 W 22nd St, Lorain OH 44052. Rev James Williams, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
