Dr. Clarence Alexander Merchant, PhD

Dr. Clarence Alexander Merchant, PhD, of Powder Springs, Georgia, entered eternal rest on December 31, 2025, at Wellstar Hospice Care Facility in Mableton, Georgia. He was born on April 14, 1967, in Oberlin, Ohio, and throughout his life he embodied discipline, curiosity, humor, and an unwavering commitment to service.

Clarence was baptized at an early age and deepened his faith later in life while living in Atlanta. His walk with God was meaningful and steady, nurtured through his fellowship with Glorious Faith Tabernacle in Oberlin, Ohio, and later under the leadership of Bishop Dale Bronner at Word of Faith Cathedral in Austell, Georgia. His faith provided both anchor and compass, guiding his decisions and sustaining him in life’s most challenging seasons.

Education was central to Clarence’s identity. A proud graduate of Oberlin High School’s Class of 1985, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Hampton University in 1990. He later completed a master’s degree from Central Michigan University in 2007 and ultimately achieved his doctorate from Argosy University in 2018. His pursuit of knowledge reflected not only ambition, but a deep belief in personal growth and generational legacy.

Clarence served his country with honor, joining the United States Army (reserves) in 1984. He later continued his public service as a federal government employee for more than a decade. Professionally, he was an entrepreneur at heart. He owned Merchant Insurance Agency and was formerly co-owner of M & S Coin Laundromat alongside his cousin, Marvin Simmons. His business ventures reflected his vision, determination, and desire to empower others.

Clarence was a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated (Omicron Mu Lambda Chapter), where brotherhood, mentorship, and leadership were pillars of his life.

Those who spent time with Clarence knew him as the life of the party — a man whose laughter filled rooms and whose presence drew people together. He possessed a contagious vigor for life, embracing new experiences, celebrating others, and finding reasons to enjoy every moment. Whether hosting, reminiscing, or simply telling a good story, Clarence made others feel welcome, seen, and uplifted.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, he passionately supported the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Guardians, and The Ohio State University — rarely missing a chance to share spirited commentary. His voice carried beyond living rooms and stadiums. He was once a radio personality at both Hampton University and in Oberlin; sharing conversation, music, and insight with enthusiasm.

Gifted creatively, Clarence played the saxophone, sang, and loved to dance. In high school, he performed with the spirited 1980s dance group “Mmmmm Boyz,” alongside Lamonte Ayers, Troy Hill, Pete Garcia, Caleb Smith, John Tolbert, Gene Townsel, Mike Watson, and Anthony White. He later co-founded Nite Hawk Productions with Anthony White, continuing his commitment to creativity and collaboration. Clarence also enjoyed traveling and following national news and politics, always eager for thoughtful discussion.

Clarence’s greatest joy was found in family. He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Kayla Anthony. He is also survived by his siblings: Kenneth (Pamela), Lawrence, Kevin (Tylicia), James, Glenetta, Rose, Julius IV, William (Paulette), and Joseph — as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his devoted parents, Julius and Carol Merchant and siblings: Robert, Julius III, and Julia.

Those who knew Clarence will remember his laughter, his intellect, his deep pride in heritage, and his unwavering determination to keep pressing forward. He lived fully, loved widely, and leaves behind a legacy of faith, scholarship, service, joy and a spirit that truly lit up every room he entered.

May his soul find rest, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
