The sun rose on Flora Mae on March 8, 1936, to the late Robert and Annie Pearson. The sun set on her life July 12, 2024. Flora was born in Pageton, West Virginia and then later moved to Switchback, West Virginia. Flora attended elementary school in Mayberry, WV. Her parents later moved to Welch, West Virginia. There she became a member of the Virginia Avenue Chapel Church. Flora attended Kimball High School, graduating in 1954. She attended Storer College where she received a nursing scholarship and played basketball. At the age of 18 Flora moved to Brooklyn, New York where she resided for 5 years. She was a nanny for one year and then worked for a book factory and American Express. Flora then moved to Akron, Ohio with her West Virginia high school sweetheart Morris Langston Eggleston; they were married in 1959. To this union was born 5 children. Their love and devotion to one another lasted until the day he passed.
As a native of Akron for 53 years she became caringly known by her neighbors as “Mamma Egg” or “Miss Flora”. She worked at the O’Neil’s department store downtown Akron for 10 years, and she worked for the Akron school system as a paraprofessional for 5 years. Flora then received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from The University of Akron and became a teacher. She taught in Akron public schools for 33 years. At Perkins Junior High she taught cooking and sewing. Later she moved to Buchtel High School where she was the instructor of CHE 1; Careers in Home Economics, by teaching and operating a childcare center and teaching restaurant entrepreneurship. She was affectionately known throughout the school system as "Miss. Egg". She loved her teaching job and all her students. She was a devoted member of Pilgrim Rest Apostolic Church under Bishop Banks. Later she joined Zion Apostolic Faith Church under the stewardship of Suffragan Bishop David Parker Sr. PAW. She labored as head cook and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the usher board and President of the Women's Missionary. She then was on the mother's board of the church. In November 2012 Flora moved to Elyria, Ohio and joined The Cathedral of Praise church under the stewardship of Bishop Melvin L Brown, in Lorain, Ohio, where she became one of the church mothers.
Flora enjoyed traveling and collecting cookbooks. As a member of the Golden Hearts Retirement Club, she visited many countries. Flora was also a member of the Summit County Retired Teachers Association. She was very friendly and loved spending time with all her friends and family.
In celebration of her life and home-going, Flora leaves behind her children, Rodney, of Columbus, Ohio; Randall and Royce (Dawndavina), of Akron, Ohio, and daughter Andrea (James) Love, of Elyria, Ohio; sixteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; daughter-in-law April Eggleston; sister-in-law Joyce Pearson; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Close loved ones called her “Flossie,” “Mom’min,” “Beulah” and “Flo-Mae.”
She was preceded in death by husband, Morris Langston Eggleston; her mother, Annie Bertina (Howard) Pack; and father, Robert Pearson; the eldest son, Reginald Allen Eggleston; brothers, Jerome Pearson, Paul Pearson, and Harold Pearson; in-laws, Irving Eggleston, Ernest Eggleston, and Marva (Irving) Samples.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 27, 2024 form 10:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM at the Cathedral of Praise, 4545 Elyria Ave, Lorain OH 44055, with Bishop Melvin L Brown, Pastor, officiating
