Gwendolyn Irene Jones

Gwendolyn Irene Jones (née Overton), 75, of Lorain, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 18, 2024, in Avon Cleveland Clinic.   

She was born July 22, 1949, in Little Rock, Arkansas, but raised in Lorain, Ohio where she graduated from Lorain High School. She then went on to the Job Corps and became a switchboard operator. She was later employed at Lithonia down lighting as a switchboard operator for 14 years before it was phased out. She then worked at and retired from the former Lorain Community Health Partners as a switchboard operator, followed by retiring from Ohio Screw Products where she was a machine operator. She was a member of the Eastern Star organization and a member of Living Word Church of Lorain where she was part of the church greeters and ushers ministry.  

Gwendolyn will be remembered for her sweet and calming demeanor. She carried the spirit of a peacemaker. Her praise was known to be thunderous and contagious. She enjoyed serving the Lord and going to church. She would also go to food drives so that she could deliver food to the sick and shut in. She loved to visit those who were in nursing homes and the hospital.   

Gwendolyn leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Michele Jones, and a son, Moses “Navon” (Melissa) Coats; one brother, Gregory Overton; three sisters, Faye Overton, Teresa Overton, and Cynthia Overton; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relative and friends.  

She was preceded into death by her parents, Tommie Sr. and Elizabeth, Overton; her brothers Tommy Jr., Cordell, Kenneth and Charles Overton; and her sisters Rose Dower and Kathress Overton.  

Visitation will be held Monday, December 2, 2024, from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Living Word Church, 2002 E. 28th St., Lorain OH 44055, where Elder Ray H. Robinson Jr., Pastor, is officiating. Her burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery
