Isaac 'Ike' Warren Maxwell, 72, of Elyria, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home in Lorain, Ohio.
Born June 3, 1953 in Elyria, Isaac was a lifelong resident who left an unforgettable mark on his community. A 1972 graduate of Elyria High School, he was an extraordinary athlete whose talent and determination made him a hometown legend. As a standout running back for the Elyria High School football team and a record-setting track and field runner, Isaac earned All-Ohio and All-American honors. Many of his athletic records still stand today, a testament to his remarkable ability and dedication.
Following high school, Isaac attended Miami University in Ohio and later the University of Akron. After completing his studies, he returned home to Elyria, where the community honored him in a rare and meaningful way; renaming 13th Street after him and establishing an annual Isaac Warren Maxwell Day in recognition of his achievements and impact.
Isaac worked in the bank repossession industry before becoming a business owner. Outside of work, he lived a life full of curiosity, discipline, and joy. He loved keeping fish aquariums, reading, riding his bike, and running; always committed to staying active and maintaining his health. His kindness, strength, and unwavering spirit touched everyone who knew him.
Isaac's life and legacy continue to inspire, so much so that a feature film about his story, Dry Bones, will premiere in London on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, ensuring that his memory will live on for generations.
He is survived by his children, Angela Maxwell, Omar (Rocio) Maxwell, and Marcus (Tiffiny) Maxwell; six grandchildren; and his siblings, Darlene Robert Sanders, Marsha Martin, Robin Maxwell, and Andrea (Ricky) Larry. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Maxwell, Jr. and Zora Elizabeth (née Belcher) Maxwell; and his siblings, Walter Maxwell II, Gloria, Darryl, Bernard Maxwell, and Shafaye Bond.
