Jewel E Carlton

Jewel E. Carlton (née Smith), 39 again and holding (actual age 81), of Lorain, Ohio, stepped into eternity on Monday, February 12, 2024. She was born in Jenkins, Kentucky to the union of the late Albert and Alice Elizabeth Smith. She was a graduate of Clearview High School, class of 1960. She married Mansfield Carlton and to this union were born five children. Her past employers include Mullers, Lake Pointe Health Center (formerly known as Ohio Extended Care), Lorain County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and Visions Day Care.

She was a member of New Life Deliverance Ministries where she served in several capacities over the years: Ordained Minister, Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, Missionary and Young People’s President, Choir Director/Member.

She enjoyed playing games, and one could rest assured that the rules would always be altered to “make it more interesting.” She loved her family immensely and was one of the forces behind holding a yearly extended family dinner—you dared not show up and were “voluntold” what to do and bring.

She did not like to see anyone hungry—just look at her children! She could whip up a delicious meal in a matter of minutes. Her sense of humor was legendary, and she could tell a story like no other. She taught her children how to laugh at themselves, how to cook, and to be fiercely independent. She expected us to use our brains and treated all of us as individuals.

Her favorite scripture is a portion of Hebrews 13:15; “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” She quoted it in her last days.

Survivors include her children: Kimberly (James) Massie, Angela Wilson, Timothy Carlton of Lorain, Ohio, and Allison Carlton of Norwalk, Ohio; siblings: Anne Cogborn of  Troy, Alabama, Alberta Francis of Lorain, Ohio, Gladys Taylor of Columbus, Ohio, and Shawn and Ondrakus Smith of Detroit, Michigan; stepmother, Doris Smith;  five grandchildren, Luke Wilson, Seth Wilson, Kier Wilson, Donovan Wilson, and Savannah Stella; eight-great grandchildren; and a host of stepsiblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mansfield Carlton, Jr.; son, Phillip Carlton; son-in-law, Donovan Wilson; siblings, John Adams, Joe Smith, Ruth Pugh, Albert Smith, Jr. and Petronilla Thomas-Nazario.
