Mattie Ruth Irby

Mattie Ruth Irby, of Sandusky, transitioned from this life on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at Firelands Regional Medical Center. Mattie was born in Waynesboro, Mississippi on Thursday, February 29, a leap year. She resided in Sandusky, Ohio for 70 years.
Mattie was a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church where she served on the Nurses Guild. Mattie retired after 30 years of service from General Motors, known as Delphi Automotive, in Sandusky. She also worked at the voting polls during the elections and volunteered at Firelands Regional Medical Center gift shop. She was also a member of the UAW Local 913. Mattie always enjoyed shopping, talking to her family on the telephone, sitting and watching the water down at the lake, and keeping secrets.

Mattie will be sadly missed by her husband of over 32 years, Samuel D. Irby Jr.; daughter Annette Rhodes of Los Angeles, CA; five grandchildren, Shameka’ (Jamar) Owens of Sandusky, Stephen Moore of Columbus, Giovahna Darden of Sandusky, Daja Saragus and David Rhodes, both of Los Angeles, CA; seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; a special niece, Delores Aaron and a host of other nieces, nephews and loving relatives.

Mattie was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Irby; her parents Edwina and Charlie Richey; a granddaughter, La′Treshia D. SowersEl; and sisters Pearlie Mae McDonald and Lee Ella Wright.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at 11 AM until the time of service at 12 noon at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1920 Eddy Henry Way in Sandusky. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Social distancing and wearing a mask are required.
