Mildred V Millette

Listen to Obituary

Mildred Veronica Millette (née Hardie), 96, of Oberlin, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home on August 8, 2026.

Born on December 1, 1929, in Guaro, Cuba, to father Hylton Hardie and mother Inez Hines, Mildred spent her formative years in Jamaica, where she taught English and worked at a travel agency. On Boxing Day in 1958, she met her future husband, James. They eventually moved to Trinidad, where they raised their three children. Mildred and James later moved to Oberlin in 1991, where she became an active member of the Oberlin community.

Mildred was an enthusiastic homemaker who loved to cook, bake, and take care of her family. She enjoyed spending time in her garden and growing her own hot peppers (her pepper sauce was legendary), and she was always the best-dressed person in any room. A lover of style and fashion, she enjoyed sewing, and she could always remember what anyone wore. In fact, her memory was so exceptional that she could remember even the smallest detail, whether it was from 5 minutes or 5 decades ago. She loved a good conversation, and she would never miss an opportunity to tell you a good story.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Dr. James Millette; daughters, Suzanne Millette-George and Corrinne Millette-Villafana; son-in-law, Ian Villafana; grandchildren, Kimberlee George (and partner Samantha Pawlak), Melissa George (and partner Mark Ballard II), Isabel Villafana, and Christian Villafana; great-grandson Griffin George, and soon-to-arrive great-grandtwins; and a large extended family.

We want to give particular thanks to family and friends who have been here and a big part of her life in the final years, especially her nieces, Lauren, Sandra, and Maria; family friends Gail, Terry, Inyang, and Tessa; and Pam, a dear friend of the family who had been taking care of Mildred in the final period of her life.

Mildred was preceded in death by her beloved son, David, and her siblings, Norma Harris and Lenville Hardie.

Funeral services and repast will be held at Oberlin House of the Lord Fellowship, 125 S Pleasant Street, Oberlin, Ohio, on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 3pm (doors opening at 2:30pm).
