Listen to Obituary

Portia Smith-Mayle, 78, was born in Grindstone, Pennsylvania, and was raised in Lorain, Ohio. She was the beloved daughter of the late Raymond Sr. and Anna Smith. From an early age, Portia was known for her caring spirit, determination, and love for her family.

Portia graduated from Admiral King High School and continued her education at Lorain County Community College, where she earned her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) degree. She dedicated her life to serving others through nursing and worked faithfully at Elyria Memorial Hospital and Palm Crest Nursing Home. After 30 years of compassionate care and dedicated service, she retired, leaving a lasting impact on the many lives she touched throughout her career.

Beyond her nursing career of passionately caring for others, Portia enjoyed simple pleasures that brought her happiness. She loved playing card games, especially Solitaire, spending time playing Facebook games, coloring, and completing word-search puzzles. A sports enthusiast, Portia enjoyed watching sports and had a passion for softball. She proudly played with the Puerto Rican Home team and the Black A.C. team, creating friendships and memories that lasted a lifetime.

Above all, Portia treasured her family. She loved gathering with loved ones, sharing stories, laughter, and creating cherished memories. Her home was a place of comfort, love, and togetherness. Her kindness, sense of humor, and unwavering love will be remembered by all who were blessed to know her.

Portia leaves to cherish her loving memory her children: Jerry (Francesca) Chisholm, Lisha Chisholm, Ericka Smith and DeJuan Jones, all of Lorain; 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Donna Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends Rene, Patty JoAnn, and Elenor.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Raymond Sr. and Anna Smith; her brother, Raymond Smith Jr; and her grandson, Derrick Smith.
