Sarah Mae Walker

Sarah Mae Walker departed this life on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Mercy Health Hospital in Oberlin, Ohio following a short illness. She was born February 11, 1944 in Myrtlewood, Alabama to Robert Haynes and Ida M. President and was affectionately raised by her stepfather, Willie President. Sarah surrendered her life to Christ at the early age of nine and was baptized. After moving from Alabama to Oberlin, Ohio during the early 1960s, she became a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Sarah worked diligently in a number of occupations that spanned five decades. In 1987, she accepted a position at Oberlin College's Food Service Division and after 32 years, she retired. By far, the most fulfilling years of her career were the years spent at Oberlin College. Sarah was a dedicated mother who worked long and hard to provide for her family. Her family meant more to her than anything; she was so proud of her five children.

Sarah lived a servant’s life and modeled a servant’s heart. For 30+ years, she was a proud member of the Ohio Order of the Eastern Star, an organization dedicated to charity, truth, and loving kindness. Her servitude didn’t stop there; she served faithfully at a local Food Bank in Elyria, Ohio after retiring. Moreover, Sarah frequently baked pound cakes for others for a variety of occasions. She was lovingly known as the "Cake Lady" as she baked the most sought-after pound cakes in all of Oberlin. Sarah found endless joy in planting and maintaining flowers.

Sarah was a loving mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, and coworker who was always nice to strangers and friends alike. She is survived by her five children, Mary President, Johnny President, Ernest President, Willie (Nicky) President, Laura (Ray) President-Seeley; her grandchildren Johnny President Jr., Joshua President, Jessica President, Terrence Lewis, Ernest President Jr., Ariadne President, Kayin President, Kalif President, Michael President-Brown, Christopher President-Brown, Maxwell President-Seeley, Katrina Brown-Taylor; her great Grandchildren, Leilani Lewis, Cataleya Rose President, Sean Hamby, Alayah Hamby; sisters Christeen Payne and Tracie Haynes; brothers Nathan Haynes, Joseph Haynes, Conroy Haynes, and Harvey Haynes; special cousin, Mary Sandifer (Boo); her great cousin, Sally President.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Lewis Walker; her father, Robert Haynes, her stepfather, Willie President and her mother, Ida M. President; and her brother, Karl Haynes.

A viewing will be held from 6pm-8pm on Thursday, January 6, at Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 2652 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 7, at 11am at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 47 Locust St, Oberlin. Pastor Fred Bell will officiate. Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery.
