Velma Jackson Davis Casteel was born August 14, 1927, in Burkville, Alabama to Johnny and Dynah Jackson. She transitioned from this life on November 29, 2025, at home with her loving, devoted family by her side, at the seasoned age of 98 years old, in Temple Hill, Maryland. She relocated to Maryland in August of this year.
Velma worked at the Hill’s Department Store for many years until she retired in 1992. She attended The Assembly of Jesus Christ Church in Sandusky. She was excellent at cooking, baking, canning and was known for her famous relish she would make.
Velma leaves to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy: her daughter Bernice (Royce) Lewis of Palm Bay, Florida; her namesake and granddaughter she raised, Velma “Neicey” Davis of Washington, D.C.; stepdaughter Janie Payne of Clinton, Michigan, and stepson Robert Wayne (Donna) Casteel of Sandusky; brother Willie James Jackson (93 years old) of Sandusky; half-sister Inez Harris (101 years old) of Chicago; sister-in-law Mattie Myhand of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren, 24 great grands, 7 great-great grands; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends; a very close devoted friend Corina Ren of New Haven, Connecticut; adopted daughter Melinda Esposito and adopted granddaughter Myrtle Griffin, both of Sandusky.
Mother Castell was preceded in death by her husband Elder Robert James Casteel; her parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; son Edward Davis Jr; daughters Carrie Davis-Jones, Lisa, Christine, Rose, Earline Casteel; grandson Royce C. Lewis Jr.; sisters Burnice, Louise, and Johnnie Mae; brothers Charlie James, Willie Frank, Starlin, and Johnny Jackson.
Service will be on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 224 Dixie Ave., Sandusky, Ohio, with visitation from 11 AM until the time of service at 12 PM. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
