Iris “Doll” McAfee-Hill
Iris “Doll” McAfee-Hill, 82 went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2022, after a long battle with the rare disease CADASIL. She was preceded in death by her parents Johnnie and Mabel McAfee, all 12 siblings, and her husband Paul E. Hill.
Iris was born on September 5, 1940, in Dublin, GA. After graduating from Mary Fleming High School in 1959, she attended Paine College, an HBCU in Augusta, GA. She was a student of the legendary Lamar School of Nursing founded by Dr. George Stoney and Lucy Craft Laney. Iris graduated in 1964 as part of the last segregated class of the University Hospital of Augusta.
After college, Iris moved to Lorain, Ohio, and started her career at Lorain Community Hospital. She was then hired at the Lorain Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant where she retired as the first African American head nurse after more than 31 years of service.
Iris was a lifetime member of the NAACP and a long-time member of Greater St. Matthew AME Church of Lorain, OH. She was a member of the Lorain Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Les Charmettes Club, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Family and friends will fondly remember Iris most for her kindness and generosity. She was a dog lover with a sweet spirit. She loved her family and was always there for anyone who needed her.
Iris is survived by her only child, Angela McAfee-Fulton (Craig), and her three legacies, granddaughter, Aris Fulton, grandson Christian Fulton, and grandson Carlyle Fulton all of Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews that she held very dear to her heart.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, from 11:00 am until time of service at 12:00 Noon, at Greater St. Matthew AME Church, 1909 West 24th Street, Lorain, OH 44052. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.
